By now, you may already know all about my obsession with robotic vacuum cleaners. I am the very proud owner of an iRobot Roomba 650, and it works tirelessly on the ground level of my home to keep my floors clean. I also own a Bobsweep PetHair Edition, which stays on the upper floor where my children, Cassie and Logan, and my dogs sleep. Bob does a decent job of picking up dirt, debris, and hair, but I recently found myself questioning my decision to purchase it – especially after having some conversations with friends and family.

A Discussion with My Brother

One of these conversations was with my brother, Daniel, who lives alone with his cat, Brittany. Despite the fact that he is allergic to her, he keeps her around because he rescued her as a kitten and does not want to give her up. (I know. He’s a stand-up guy.) Anyway, because I know his allergies are pretty bad, much like my son’s, we started discussing my decision to purchase the Bobsweep on the phone one day. I was explaining to him why I chose this particular robot vacuum cleaner, when he surprised me by saying he owned an iRobot Roomba 770 Vacuum Cleaning Robot for pets and allergies and that he had for years.

You see, Daniel works 80 hours a week, and he works nights, so he doesn’t have a lot of time for manual vacuuming – or cleaning in general, for that matter. Because he is allergic to Brittany, he has to keep the hair and dander off the floor or face the consequences of itchy, red eyes, hives, sneezing, runny nose, and other symptoms (namely grouchiness). He said he purchased the 770 to do just that two years ago and that it hasn’t let him down yet. I decided I needed to see the Roomba 770 in action for myself, so I asked him to switch with me for a day or two. I assured him that the Bobsweep PetHair Edition was indeed designed to pick up cat hair, and he reluctantly agreed.

My Impression of the iRobot Roomba 770

Daniel stopped by on his way to work the next evening and picked up Bob, but he left his Roomba 770 behind. It looked a lot like my 650, but not exactly the same, and I found myself wondering exactly what the differences were. While I charged the Roomba, I decided to look online to see if I could figure out what was so special about the 770. According to the literature, the 770 add to the already fabulous features of the 650, such as the ability to avoid off-limit areas and get up close to walls and baseboards. However, the 770 adds Extended-Life Power Management, which means it can clean longer on every charge. That was intriguing. I love my 650, but more power per charge would be awesome! It also has a larger bin, so it doesn’t get full as quickly, and the full bin indicator lets you know when it’s time to empty. It is supposedly better at detecting dirt, and it comes with dual HEPA filters – something that would certainly help my son’s allergies. Finally, the 770 has two virtual walls as compared to the 650’s single virtual wall, and it comes with a remote control. (I really enjoy this feature on the Bobsweep.)

With all of this information in mind, my expectations of the iRobot Roomba 770 were high. Since it was fully charged, I decided to turn it on and let it get to work upstairs. The first area of concern is my son’s room because he is allergic to dog hair. I set up the virtual wall to keep it from exiting through the doorway, and I let it go. My kids were at school and the dogs were downstairs, so I decided to leave it alone and come back a couple of hours later.

When I returned, the floors were clean. I checked under the beds and against the headboards for hair, and there was none. The real test, though, was whether my son would start sneezing when he came in from school. This theory was put to the test a little while later and no sneezing, coughing, or runny nose ensued. I knew then and there that the Roomba 770 would live up to expectations, but we weren’t finished with our testing yet.

Logan is a fan of anything remote-controlled, so we took the Roomba to the bathroom to see what it could do on the tile floor. I handed him the remote control and let him go to work. He had a lot of fun telling the little robotic vacuum cleaner where to go, and I was glad that it was small enough to fit behind the toilet – somewhere that nobody likes to venture. At this point, we noticed the full bin indicator light, but the iRobot vacuum didn’t stop. It just kept cleaning. I emptied the bin (which is much easier on the 770 than on the Bobsweep, I should add) and set it right back to work.

What Daniel Thought of the Bobsweep

By the time my brother returned my Bobsweep before supper that day, I didn’t want to let the Roomba 770 go. It was definitely better than my Bobsweep. Daniel showed up a little after five that afternoon, and he didn’t look pleased. His eyes were red, he was sneezing, and he had little bumps on his face – he had an allergy attack! I asked him what happened, and he said that he turned Bob on before he left for work the night before, thinking he’d return to a clean apartment. (He was as excited as I was to try a new product.) Unfortunately, Bob’s bin got full at some point during the night, so the robotic vacuum cleaner did not clean the cat hair from the floor efficiently. I doubt that my brother is ever going to let me borrow his 770 again after this, but that’s okay. I’m not finished reviewing the iRobot products yet, but one thing is for certain. Bob is getting replaced. I have some serious research to do.

Would I buy the 770 instead of the 650?

From what I can SEE the cleaning is a little better, but they aren’t worlds apart. So the cleaning system might be advanced, but I don’t go crazy about it.

What I can’t SEE is the quality of the air I am breathing, but there seems to be a big difference. Wasn’t funny for my brother to figure that out and I somehow believe that my son slept better. Maybe that was only my feeling; I only had it for two days. However, you know that as a mom, it feels better if you know you’ve done everything you could. Anyway, that’s definitely a feature my next buy has.

What definitely is an advantage to the 650 is the full bin indicator (which should be standard on all robotic vacuum cleaners, in my opinion). I add that to the list too.

The second virtual wall is nice. I don’t really need it, but that depends on personal preferences and living conditions.

The remote is a nice toy (my son loves it) but with proper scheduling the 650 does everything automatically and that’s what you expect from an automatic cleaner, right? So that would not be a reason to spend more money to enter the next level.

The 650 gets tangled few time to time. I haven’t experienced that with the 770, but I only had it for two days, so that’s not really proven.

My Final Thoughts

I’m in a bit of a pickle now. I know that I need to replace the Bobsweep, because while it is a very good product, it just does not offer all of the features that the iRobot Roomba robotic vacuum cleaners do, and it is obvious from my brother’s experience that there are some flaws in its design. I’m in love with my 650, though, and I’m not sure I’ll ever replace it, but I need something more advanced for the upstairs area since my son’s allergies can be pretty intense.

There are tons of robotic vacuum cleaners out there, but in my experience, the iRobot Roomba 650 is by far the best value for the money. It keeps up with the traffic from my kids, dogs, and husband, and it does a very thorough job in terms of cleaning. While the full bin indicator and HEPA filters on the more advanced models are great additions, I am not sure yet if I need to spend more for those features for the lower level of my home when the 650 is doing such a great job overall.
