Using Virtual Lighthouses, it gets things done faster than the Roomba 770, cleaning results are better than the Roomba 650‘s and only a little behind the iRobot Roomba 880 Vacuum Cleaning Robot. I’ve been reviewing iRobot Roomba robotic vacuum cleaners for quite some time now. Up to this point, I’ve experienced several models, including the iRobot Roomba 650 vacuum cleaning robot for pets (which I own and keep on the lower level of my home), its previous model the Roomba 630, and the next level model the iRobot Roomba 770 vacuum cleaning robot for pets and allergies. This post is about my experiences with the iRobot Roomba 780 Vacuum Cleaning Robot For Pets And Allergies, which basically is a better-equipped version of the Roomba 770. We put together the main differences between all models at the end of this article as a summary.

After my last couple of experiences, I learned that I needed to replace my Bobsweep PetHair Edition (Bob) that lives upstairs in my home because it is not the right vacuum choice for my son’s allergies. While it gets the floor clean, my brother quickly discovered that it was not capable of adequately removing cat hair from his floors and keep allergens in its filters. Although Bob would be great for someone without allergies, he just isn’t right for my family. And without allergies, I would recommend the Roomba 650 instead of the Bobsweep.

Why I Choose an iRobot Roomba.

I knew that I wanted something manufactured by iRobot. Other companies out there make robotic vacuum cleaners for pet hair and allergies (you want to look out for HEPA filters), but iRobot is the king of robotic everything. They know what it takes to build a quality machine. In fact, they are known for designing some of the most impressive high-tech robots on the planet, and it goes far beyond vacuum cleaners. For instance, iRobot products allow couples to communicate with each other across oceans, and they even help SWAT teams and military installations diffuse bombs. The company’s customer care team is impressive, too. They are available by phone, email, and live chat, and if you would rather solve problems on your own before reaching out (like me), you can find user manuals, FAQs, and even video tutorials via their website.

Something else that occurred to me is the availability of parts for these robotic vacuum cleaners. If something breaks due to an accident (or my son who seems fascinated with trying to take things apart), or even if a part of the vacuum cleaner simply wears out, it is easy to order and exchange the broken parts myself. Whereas many products these days are designed in a way that makes it difficult to repair them myself, iRobot thought of everything. If something breaks, all I have to do is call iRobot’s outstanding customer service. They will not only send me the part, but they will also send me links to video tutorials on their website! These will certainly make swapping out parts simpler.

Finding an iRobot Roomba 780.

Up to this point, I’ve gotten lucky. My mother-in-law, Sue, has an iRobot Roomba 630 vacuum cleaning robot, I own the Roomba 650 and the Bobsweep PetHair Edition, and my brother has the iRobot Roomba 770 vacuum cleaning robot for pets allergies, so I’ve experienced all of these. I wasn’t sure that making phone calls would lead me to a Roomba 780, but I didn’t want to purchase one just to have an opportunity to review it, either. Thus, I did what anyone would do in today’s day and age – I took my quest to Facebook. Here’s my post:

“Because of Logan’s allergies, I’m in search of a new robotic vacuum cleaner. I still need to review the Roomba 780 model. Does anyone have one I can borrow for a day or two? I’ll let you borrow my Bobsweep….”

Honestly, I didn’t really expect an immediate response. I still had no idea that robotic vacuum cleaners were so popular, though. A few hours later, I got a comment from a friend of mine who lives just down the street from me. Heath said that his family uses a Roomba 780 in their two-story home and that he was also looking into other robotic vacuums since he wanted to purchase a second one for his upper level. It was the perfect opportunity! I walked over to his house with Bob, and we swapped. While I was there, I asked him if I could go upstairs and check out his floors. He laughed a little and I wondered if maybe I was taking the whole vacuum thing too far, but he’s on the same quest and assured me that he understood. (He came to my house to look at my floors, too!) The floors were clean despite the fact that he has three little boys and an adorable little girl, and although he does not have pets, two of his kids suffer from allergies to pollen. He assured me that since he purchased the 780, their allergies had gotten much better. We said our goodbyes, and I took the Roomba 780 home.

Setting Up the Virtual Lighthouses

The Roomba 780 is a bit different from the Roomba 770 model in that the actual buttons on top of the vacuum are gone; instead, there is a really cool light-up touchpad! It also offers two Virtual Lighthouses that work differently than the virtual walls; rather than simply blocking off an area, it tells the Roomba which area to clean first and where to go next, reducing the number of passes it makes and thereby improving its efficiency. Check out this video, it’s really a cool feature.

Setting them up was simple enough thanks to the user manual I found online (not to mention the fact that Heath gave me a quick rundown). I put the first Virtual Lighthouse in Cassie’s room and the second one in Logan’s room, set up the virtual wall to keep it out of the bathroom, and simply closed my bedroom door. Then, I set the Roomba free in the hallway.

I watched it clean the hallway for a bit, noticing how it got right up close to the baseboards along the walls while avoiding the stairs. (Until you see this in action, you have no idea how cool it actually is. It’s almost like the vacuum has a brain – and it does, in a sense, because iRobot programmed it that way. Make sure to check out the above video, you don’t want to miss it.) After the hallway was clean, the Roomba went right into Cassie’s room and went to work. There was no hesitation thanks to the Virtual Lighthouse in the doorway. Now that I was satisfied with the Roomba 780’s operation and I felt confident that it would continue to clean my son’s room after it finished with my daughter’s, I went back downstairs to start prepping for supper.

Roomba 780 – Cleaning Results

I guess it took me about 45 minutes to get the steaks marinating and the veggies chopped, so when I was finished, I went back upstairs to check out the Roomba’s progress. It was nestled in its charging dock (under the hall table) and both of the kids’ rooms were completely clean. There was no dog hair, no debris, no dirt – no anything. I did notice the full bin indicator light (something I loved about the Roomba 770), so I emptied the bin before packing everything up to take back to Heath. One of the things that I love about this particular model is the HEPA filters, which filter out even the tiniest of particles to help my son breathe better. The full bin indicator is also a plus, and the fact that the 780 utilizes the AeroVac Series 2 bin, which prevents clogs and allows the bin to hold more than any model before it, makes it a great choice for my high-traffic household. It’s also programmable, which would allow me to schedule it to clean while my family sleeps, and it comes with a remote control, which would make my technology-junkie son incredibly happy.

Heath’s Experience with the Bobsweep PetHair Edition

I went that evening after supper to return Heath’s Roomba 780 and pick up Bob. Honestly, I felt a little bad for passing Bob around so much lately, but it’s for the sake of research. When I got there, Heath’s floors looked clean, which definitely made me feel a little better about my decision. As it turns out, Bob isn’t useless – he’s just not right for my family’s needs. He expressed some concern for his boys’ allergies, stating that he chose the 780 because of the HEPA filtration, which Bob lacks. He says he doubts that a single day without the HEPA filters made a huge difference, but he thinks it definitely would make his sons’ allergies worse over time. I couldn’t help but agree. Reluctantly, I handed over the Roomba 780 and told him I loved it, but he was not willing to part with it. At any rate, I hadn’t yet decided which model I would purchase for my upper level. I still wanted to check out my options.

Roomba 780 vs. 650

The same differences as to the 770 plus the Virtual Lighthouses. The 650 is a very good product, which I would definitely recommend if you don’t have pets or allergies. If you have pets, the cleaning results are still very good, but the 770’s are better. If you have allergies, the 650 is out, because it doesn’t come with HEPA filters, which I – personal opinion – would definitely go for. And to feel more 21st century, the full bin indicator, the Virtual Lighthouses and the fact that it tends to tangle less make it my pick.

Roomba 780 vs 770

I loved the iRobot Roomba 780, and I knew that I was getting closer to making my ultimate decision once I returned it to Heath. The only differences to the Roomba 770, the Virtual Lighthouses, were the best addition to the series yet, in my opinion. It made cleaning incredibly efficient when combined with all of the other technologies, including the powerful vacuum, the awesome brushes, and the full bin indicator. I wouldn’t replace my 650 with it, though, because I just don’t really need all of those features downstairs and it doesn’t make any sense to me to spend the extra money on features I won’t really use. I do need to rely on an upstairs robotic vacuum cleaner to get the job done while the family is asleep, though, so the more efficient and quiet it is, the better.

Roomba 780 vs. 880

Thanks to my Facebook post, it seems that I’ve generated quite the following. Many of my friends are interested in learning more about automatic vacuum cleaners now, and I’m always telling them how much easier my life has become since investing in the 650. The Roomba 780 showed me that I was getting closer to making the right choice, but I don’t think I’m there yet. iRobot has two 800 series models that I want to review. However, since the Roomba 870 comes without Virtual Lighthouses, the iRobot Roomba 880 Vacuum Cleaning Robot is the only possibility to upgrade from the 780. The 880 comes with Virtual Lighthouses (these are a must-have for me now, when I invest in a new model) and the cleaning system is even better.

What’s Next?

During my research, I also came across other iRobot Roomba models in the 800 series, and I’d really like to give those a try before I get the 780. Fortunately, my best friend, Fawn, uses the iRobot Roomba 880 Vacuum Cleaning Robot (click to read my review) on her single-level home, which is always immaculate despite the fact that she has a three-year-old son.
